With hot summers and cold winters, Vienna has the quintessential continental climate. Spring is rainy and cool until mid-April, with temperatures hovering around 15 degrees. The city sizzles during June, July and August and bear in mind that many of the concert halls and theatres shut during this time for their annual holidays. Autumn is the best time to go, with clear, bright skies and, in winter, bitterly cold winds whip down the streets with heavy snow arriving from later December onwards, giving the city a magical coating at Christmas time.
