VIENNA THEATRE

Vienna Theatres – Not only are the theatrical performances spectacular in Vienna but so are the venues, especially at night when they are beautifully lit up and going to a theatre, if just to see the exterior, and indeed the luxurious interiors, is a must-do experience in itself. If you want to understand the performances then it helps if you speak German but there are a couple of English-speaking theatre groups that specialise in musicals, one that specialises in dance and one puppet theatre. See the Section on “Sightseeing” in this Guide for info on the famous Staatsoper – Vienna’s State Opera Theatre.

Travel Guide

Tickets are usually purchased directly from the theatres box office and prices vary greatly depending on what you’re seeing with some being available on the day of the performance. Your best approach is to check out what will be on during your visit and tickets can be booked online. Also, bear in mind that many of the city’s theatres and concert halls close during the summer months.

Burgtheatre
1, Dr Kark Lueger Ring 2
Telephone – 514 44 444
This world-famous venue is an artwork itself with sumptuous décor and ceiling frescos by Franz Matsch and Gustav Klimt. The Emperor Franz Josef first set eyes on his mistress of 40 years while watching a performance here and a guided tour, if you understand German, is a must. The performances are innovative and spoken drama and tickets cost between €4 and €44.

Akademietheatre
3, Lisztstrasse 1
Telephone – 514 44 410
This theatre shows a more contemporary and translated repertoire of plays than the Burgtheatre, although they share the same pool of actors so the quality of performance is very high.

Theatre-in-der-Josefstraat
8, Josefstadterstrausse
Telephone 24 26 42700
A beautiful 18th century theatre, built in 1788, showing a variety of serious and popular German language dramas. The interior is stunning, especially the ornate chandeliers.

International Theatre
9, Porzellangasse, 8
Telephone – 319 6272
A popular ex-pat venue that performs well-received plays such as The Mousetrap. Closed July and August.

Vienna’s English Theatre
8, Josefsgasse 12
Telephone – 402 1260
The professional performers are flown in from London and act in well-produced mainstream productions here.

Figurentheatre
Lilarum, 3, Gollnergasse 8
Telephone – 710 26 66
A lovely puppet theatre that puts on several performances from Wednesday to Sundays and during the school performances. The theatre is out in Landstrasse, so you will need to take the U-bahn to get there.
